Construction organisations were amongst more than 130 businesses to public call for Scotland to vote “No thanks” in the Scottish Independence referendum on 18th September.

Amongst other construction operations Springfield Properties, Babcock and the Weir Group joined forces with senior figures from the Scottish business community with an open letter to the Scotsman newspaper in asking the Scottish people to vote to remain part of the United Kingdom on the 18th.

The debate comes at a time when UK construction output has reached a 7 month high, and Scottish construction has reportedly regained pre-recession levels clearly benefiting from the Scottish and UK government’s infrastructure investments.

The open letter to the Scotsman detailed “uncertainty surrounding vital issues” including currency, tax, pensions, EU membership and worldwide exports, arguing that retaining the union would be better for Scottish businesses.

Although the currency seems to have been at the heart of the national debate, it is clear business community is starting to become concerned about the possibility of independence and the realities that would have for their businesses, whilst volatility has been introduced to the markets due to the growing prominence of the nationalist's position.
