Balfour Beatty has announced they've been awarded the contract to complete and fit out the new £70m Crossrail station development at Woolwich.

The project will take around four years and will allow commuters in Woolwich to reach a wide range of destinations around London and significantly reducing the commuting time for people in areas such as Bond Street, Heathroow and Canary Wharf.

The works are to include designing, fitting-out and handing over the new Woolwich station together with installing plant and finishing works at the two portals where the Crossrail trains emerge on the surface from both end of the Thames Tunnel at North Woolwich and Plumstead.

In a positive move for the construction industry it’s envisaged at the height of the works there will be 200 construction workers on site with work commencing in September 2014 and being completed in 2018.

Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction Chief Executive Officer, Nicholas Pollard, said: “Our experienced major project team’s ability to deliver high profile infrastructure schemes has been recognised with this award of the final Crossrail station package for Europe’s largest construction project. Our use of innovative computer-aided Building Information Modelling tools, linked to off-site construction, will reduce the overall works programme compared to traditional construction methods.”

Balfour Beatty has been much in the news over the last few months with failed merger talks with Carilion but is an experienced Crossrail partner, already in the process of delivering a number of stations around the Greater London area and this joins the growing good news for the business of late which may be indicative of the company's positive future.
