A £600m mixed-used Salford scheme has gained outline planning permission for 2,000 homes and 75,000 sq ft commercial and retail space.

The scheme, will be constructed at Middlewood Locks which is centred around three large basins of the canal will be developed on a 23-acre brownfield site close to the former Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal in Salford.

The landscaping strategy includes connecting the green spaces with the canal, incorporating a woodland theme and an adventure playground to create a better sense of community for the new residents.

The developer Scarborough Group has teamed up with developers from Hong Kong and Singapore to deliver the ambitious construction project which it’s expected will have a development value of around £600m.

The VJ known as Fairbriar Developments has developed new plans for 11 main construction sites, which will see a new 24-storey apartment block being built as well as gym, restaurant and shops. The scheme could also include a 32-storey plus another two 25-storey towers.

The development will commence later this year to take advantage of the increasing demand for prime housing developments in and around Manchester.

Simon McCabe, director of Scarborough, said: “We are pleased to have received this planning consent for Middlewood Locks, which is a real vote of support for our plans to create a new mixed-use community.

“Middlewood Locks is ideally located, just a short work from the central business district and retail amenities, so we are confident that this project will be a huge success and create a fantastic community environment for its future residents.”

OBAS CEO Norman Tenray said: “It’s fantastic to see such a prominent development taking place in the North West. This will drive growth in construction jobs, demand for construction supplies and further stimulate the region’s economy.”
