In a move that should be warmly welcomed by the UK's energy efficiency industry, the Liberal Democrats have pledged to give a £100 tax cut for those households that invest in making their homes more energy efficient.

The party’s manifesto is due to be published this Wednesday however it’s been announced that it will include provisions to reward those people who have improved the energy efficiency of their homes by giving them a council tax discount and reducing their energy bills.

On top of this there are proposals for five new “green laws” designed to further protect the environment with the ultimate aim of moving Britain towards a “zero carbon Britain”.

Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Energy and Climate said: “We want to make it as easy as possible to go green and by introducing higher new standards, industries from construction through to waste, heating and transport will have to help us all become more sustainable – as many leading, innovating firms are already doing.”

Discussing the plans, Chief executive of the Green Building Council Paul King said it: “raises the bar for other parties to respond to”.

He went on to say: “Energy bills are going to be one of the top issues at the next election. The Lib Dems are right to commit to a national energy efficiency programme, but this needs to be able to compete for capital investment with other infrastructure priorities if it is going to be of sufficient scale; while a Zero Carbon Britain Bill must also recognise and build upon the existing targets for zero carbon homes and buildings.”
