We've come a long way since the small roomed, paper thin walled houses that were built in the 1980s and there’s a stigma surrounding new builds, but new-builds have to be built and sold, to deal with the UK’s housing crisis.

As an industry it’s going to become increasingly more important to make our buyers understand the benefits of new builds.

According to RIBA around 75% of people in the UK never want to live in a new build home, preferring to opt for properties with character however there has been a great deal of progress in housing designs and it’s about time we started celebrating it.

The key to designing and building the right type of new homes is understands how people want to live in those homes. The Future Homes Commission has gone a long way to giving us some of those answers. People want natural light through large windows, high ceilings, a large main living room as well as flexible spaces and storage.

In the public’s eye the thing that contains most of this is a Victorian terrace house however it’s up to us to show them that new build homes can provide everything that the Victorian terraces can and more.

On top of this we need to promote the advantages of modern building regulations and building techniques, demonstrating how much more efficient these homes can be, perhaps focussing on the cost-saving benefits of them in the long run when compared to an older property.

Ultimately, people are rarely rational when they’re spending hundreds of thousands of pounds however it’s part of construction’s role to help our home buyers understand the importance of new build and the benefits of them.
